In Paris they have the sanisettes. These are public toilets, which you can use for free! It might come in handy when you are walking somewhere and your apartment in Paris isn’t nearby!

Because a Frenchmen called Philippe Dorcourt, never seemed to be able to find a sanisette when he really really had to go, he wrote the Paris Pause Pipi-Guide. It’s an e-book with 36 pages full of maps of the all of the arrondissements, which indicate where to find them. You can order it on his website for EUR 2.80.

What are they? These sanisettes? You might wonder. When I tell people about these sanisettes, they immediately think of the seatless toilets with a hole in the ground. Well if you where thinking this while reading the text above, you’re wrong. They are highly sophisticated booths, you can find all across Paris and they have there own cleaning ritual. Ok then now the ‘how’ part. How does it work?

How to use a sanisette in 4 steps:

1. Look whether it isn’t occupied. If it’s vacant it will be indicated by a green light on the door of the sanisette. Then press the button to open the door. Usually you can use the sanisettes for free, but when you aren’t in the city center you might have to pay 20 eurocents. The door will close automatically, as it has a sensor that notices you in the booth.

2. Do your business, you don’t have to flush, the sanisette will do that for you.

3. Now washing your hands. If it works, you’ll have to put you hands in the washing basin beneath the mirror. It will poor water and soap over your hands. Don’t be scared because a few seconds later it will blow-dry your hand. 

4. When you are ready to leave, open the door. A few moments after, the door will shut and the sanisette will prepare itself for the next visitor.

New travel guide Paris

There is a new travel guide on today’s market. Not the Inside Guide nor the Lonely Planet. It’s the Da Vinci Code. The novel written by Dan Brown is being used as a travel guide, bizarre isn’t it?

Well, perhaps you don’t want to read the whole thing again with pen and paper to plan which  sights you want to see. Actually there are tour guides specialized in Da Vinci Code tours like… So you can’t afford to stay at the Ritz as the main character did in the Da Vinci Code, affordable apartments in Paris are not that hard to find.

Free Internet near your Paris Apartment Accommodation

After the almost free service of Vélib (the public bicycle system in Paris), since last Monday Paris is even getting hipper. At already 105 places you can have a wireless Internet connection for free. That was already possible on the square of the Centre Pompidou, but now there are much more such places. I don't know how they do it, but the service only works between 7 and 23 hours. For visitors staying in an Apartment in Paris or in a Hotel in Paris here an overview of the districts where this service is already available. France Télécom, known for their inefficient service (speaking out of experience) will probably start a process against it because they are bound to lose a lot of their customers this way. So try to enjoy this service as long as you can! Enjoy Paris!

Paris Eiffel Tower Fraud!

For many years you didn’t need to be a professional hacker to break into the cash register of the Eiffel tower. For the pay-desk staff of one of the worlds most visited monuments it was a question of simply turning the printer on and off - and the sale of the entry ticket was no longer registered.

A family with three children, who rented an apartment in Paris for a weekend to visit the 118th year old tower, handed over 50 euro which in turn disappeared into the pocket of one of the members of the pay-desk staff.

Ginette, Josette, Marguerite, Edith, Eloïsa and ten other pay-desk employees, for most part neat ladies of a certain age, sold this way between 1996 and 2002 a suspected 112,000 illegal tickets.

The turnover of almost one million euro became a supplement above their monthly salary.

Five years ago they were finally discovered. The operator of the Eiffel tower received an anonymous letter from a previous employee, who revealed the illegal practices.

The Executive Board asked assistance from justice and could examine at which pay-desks fraud was committed.

Initially the pay-desk staff confessed but later they reversed their statement into saying that they were not guilty. The justice department was not too impressed. How could it be possible that some of the staff member’s didn’t withdrawal any money from their bank account for years? And where did the high amounts came from they deposited from time to time into their bank account? Were that really “tips”, as they said it were? Moreover, the staff members thought guilty of fraud sold considerably less tickets than their colleagues.

The judge condemned about fifteen of them last week because of the fraud. They received conditional prison sentences of up to three months and fines up to twenty thousand euro.

In addition they must repay the money which they stole between 2000 and 2002 plus interest, summing in total 700,000 euro. For the most fanatical defrauder the amount to be paid back is almost 100.000 euro.

The judge took into account that the condemned have a representative function: the twelve ladies and three lords were considered to leave a good impression of France to the many thousands of tourists who visit the Eiffel tower each year.

The construction of Gustav Eiffel gets almost seven millions visits annually.

Initially the tower would have been demolished twenty years after construction (build for the World Exhibition), but the then highest construction the world survived, proved to be a handy communication tower and became eventually the most important and most known symbol of France.

Protests in Paris – Tourism Stays Stable

At the beginning of March 2006, the French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin introduced a bill which was supposed to lower the high unemployment rate among the French youth. It says that French corporates can give notice to new employees within their first two years of working without giving any reason. Unemployment rate among graduated students and especially lower educated youngsters is estimated to be at 23% and the law is supposed to improve the employment by companies. However, the opposite happened. Companies are even more precautious because of the late refusal of the law and the confusing situation, which does not allow to make a long-term outlook. The protests against de Villepin and the government lasted from around the 18th - 28th of March and culminated in severe battles with the police, although the aggression is said to be incited by only few violent groups. People kept on protesting against the law for about 2 weeks and finally reached the withdrawal of the government.
Consequences for France are difficult and the country is said to be stagnating politically until the next elections in early 2007. However, there is also a severe economic damage which influences every sector. In case of tourism, Paris was affected highly as most demonstrations took place there. Browsing several forums on the internet like e.g. the lonelyplanet.com  resulted in repeating posts of people visiting the French capital and wondering if it would be safe. Answers varied a lot and discussions went into severe quarrels from time to time because of a tense atmosphere within the country. Visitors going to France and people making posts on forums just did not understand the brouhaha of the French people and underestimated the significance for the affected persons. Maybe also because they live in a country where such treatment towards employees is already practiced more or less, such as the U.S. or Germany.
Finally, people still travelled to Paris and there is no single report of touristic involvement in one of the demonstrations, which shows that it is secure to visit Paris. There have been few warnings to keep tourists away from certain districts and only the United States warned their citizens to stay away from protesting crowds and public meetings. There was also no severe decrease in hotel bookings or the renting of apartments as the providers www.all-paris-apartments.com stated. Therefore, what remains after weeks of trouble and stagnancy is an uncertain future for France and a smack of typical French protesting attitude. When the Walt Disney Company launched its idea of creating a resort in 1987 in France, Europe, expectations were high and critics denounced it to be a useless try. On the one hand it amazes children with human-like puppets such as Micky Mouse, Donald Duck or Goofy, several carousels and parades during the day. Moreover, kids can even choose whether they want to have breakfast, lunch or dinner with one of their favorite characters. On the other hand it offers concerts, Wild West Shows and different decorated restaurants for adults at night. For leisure amusements, there is also a golf course nearby where visitors can improve their skills while their kids enjoy themselves in one of the five parks named Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland, Discoveryland or USA Main Street. All this is supposed to ensure the joy of the tourists and to spread the image of Walt Disney's main idea: The fact that dreams can become true if you strongly believe in them.
